HANDMADE BOOK DESIGN - YOKAI
Yokai are creatures from Japanese folklore. Anything could become a yokai; they could be a human, animals, plants, even a chair or umbrella. Most of them would turn because of strong emotion, each of them has their feature. I found this is interesting and I like Japanese culture a lot. Therefore I’ve made this book to introduce Yokai and wanted to share with others.
I’ve chosen a handmade paper with gold glitter, and clean typesetting with Chinese, Japanese and English introducing the name of each yokai.This book is designed without book cover to remain a mysterious atmosphere as youkai and Japanese Zen.
Penguin Book Cover Design
This project is to design a new cover for the book, “ In Cold Blood”, with given template to work with. The project was run in the form of a competition entry for the Penguin Books UK.
While “In Cold Blood” was described as “one of the stupendous books of the decade”, my design leaves hints about the ending which is a greeting gesture of two murders. The handshake on the cover implies that there could be more than one killer and underlines the relation- ship between the characters involved; the red stain above, on the other hand, is trying to convince the reader that something terrific happened behind a greeting gesture.
